Martin made BIC Green Supply Chain Committee chair

Elsevier's Rachel Martin has been appointed chair of Book Industry Communication's (BIC) recently created Green Supply Chain Committee, as it launches a new work plan to make the supply chain greener and more sustainable.

The director of global sustainability at Elsevier is among representatives from 20 organisations on the committee, which was established for key book industry delegates to convene on a regular basis and find solutions for environmental issues in the supply chain.

The committee will be responsible for overseeing the delivery of its recently agreed Green Supply Chain Work Plan, which uses the United Nations Sustainability Development Goals as its framework and addresses key areas including training, waste prevention, returns and collaboration with the Green Book Alliance

Commenting on her role, Martin said: “The effects of climate change are being felt in every region of the world and urgent action is needed. It is a privilege to become the new chair of the Green Supply Chain Committee. I look forward to working with the committee members as we champion the green agenda across the book sector and sharpen our focus and actions on making our complex supply chains greener and more sustainable."

BIC said it is focused on developing and promoting industry standards to help reduce individual company's carbon footprints and help organisations become more sustainable.

Karina Urquhart, executive director of BIC, noted: “As global director for sustainability at Elsevier, and with the full support of the BIC Green Supply Chain Committee, Rachel is strongly positioned to help steer us towards a successful delivery of the BIC Green Work Plan."

She added: "I am delighted that she has agreed to take up the position of chair and am looking forward to working with Rachel over the coming months and years on this incredibly important area for the book industry.”
