Cassie Browne will join Harvill as publishing director for Harvill this autumn. Vintage managing director Hannah Telfer said Browne will join the imprint on 10th November.
Browne joins Harvill from Quercus where, as fiction publisher, she has led the commercial fiction publishing list which includes the Sunday Times bestselling authors Beth O’Leary, Elly Griffiths, Ken Follett, and JP Delaney.
She started her career at HarperCollins in 2006, and she was part of the team that founded The Borough Press in 2012. As editorial director, she worked with authors including Joanna Cannon, Susie Steiner, Cynthia D’Aprix Sweeney and Michael Punke.
She joined Quercus in 2016 and oversaw the expansion of Quercus Fiction’s genre publishing, which included the successful re-brand of Jo Fletcher Books into Arcadia, Quercus’ Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror imprint.
The appointment comes a few months after Harvill rebranded as a fiction imprint.
Telfer said: “The evolution of Harvill as a fiction-focused list is well underway and I’m thrilled to have found in Cassie a strategic, high-energy leader and brilliant publisher to join our excellent team and take the imprint’s ambitious plans forward. We’re proud to publish such a formidably talented group of authors at Harvill: they, and their books, are the heart of our strategy and, with Cassie’s appointment, we have a team perfectly placed to deliver for them and to grow the list further.”

Browne said: “In the nine extremely happy years that I have worked at Quercus and Hachette, I have learned so much from my inspiring colleagues, and it has been a privilege to work with all our wonderful authors and their agents. Although I am deeply sad to leave them behind, I am excited about the opportunity of working with Hannah and the Harvill team on its new fiction focus. I have long admired Harvill’s authors and its publishing, and it is a huge honour to be leading it in this next phase of its growth and success.”
The Harvill team to be led by Cassie Browne includes associate publishing director Liz Foley, senior commissioning editor Ellie Steel and assistant editors Chris Sturtivant and Sania Riaz.
The team also includes publicity director Mia Quibell-Smith and head of marketing Sam Rees-Williams.
