Penguin Children’s is experimenting with augmented reality for the first time by adding an AR function to the new Skylanders book, published this month under the Puffin imprint.
Augmented reality allows readers to "zap" codes embedded in the book with their phone, which downloads additional content such as videos or stories.
WithSkylanders SWAP Force: Master Eon's Official Guide, users can zap content onto an app developed by Zappar (www.zappar.com) to access biographies of the heroes and villains in the Skylanders series.
Juliet Matthews, publishing director for media and entertainment at Penguin Children’s, said AR will allow children to access a new dimension in their reading experience. They will be able to “engage with the characters on a deeper level”, she added.
Skylanders started life as a video game, developed by Vicarious Visions, in 2011.
Skylanders SWAP Force: Master Eon's Official Guide will be published by Puffin 26th June (p/b £7.99).
