A new publisher called North House Press has been founded by David Graham, formerly of BT Batsford, Pavilion and Canongate Books, and award-winning novelist Kirsty Gunn. The aim of the new publisher is to "engage in the culture of Scotland in imaginative, innovative and exciting ways".
The publisher, based in Sutherland in the Highlands of Scotland, will be a blend of fiction and non-fiction, "introducing new voices and restoring to the public attention overlooked writing from the past while bringing into focus the unique characteristics and qualities of Scottish literature and culture".
The list will launch later in 2026, with a programme of six to eight titles. Graham said: "The fact that we are based in a remote area of the Highlands – far from the traditional centres of publishing – is, for us, an absolute advantage.
"We aim to do things differently: working in a detailed fashion from the ground up, focusing on publishing books we love, with high literary, intellectual and cultural values, that take risks and change lives… all of which has nothing to do with budgets or following trends. It’s to do with promoting what might otherwise be missed and celebrating a new way of thinking about literature and how we engage with it. And we’ll be bringing these books to readers all over the world."

"Our books have a Scottish, very Highland feel, while reaching into all corners of the world," Gunn said. "We may be small, but we have fabulous far-sighted horizon lines up here in the North and we think big."
North House Press will launch in May 2026 with three titles by Scottish novelist Neil M Gunn, including a centenary edition of his debut, The Grey Coast.
Gunn added: "These three novels are a case in point. These were internationally bestselling classics that have been shockingly overlooked in Scotland and beyond, that are universal in their themes and subjects yet are distinctively Highland… that kind of sums us up."
Graham added: "We believe there is an audience for books about Scotland that are serious, challenging and always engaging and that we are publishing into a gap in the market for such books and adding new and diverse voices, broadening the scope and definition of what makes up Scottish culture."
North House Press is working with Saraband and their sales and distribution teams PGUK and Macmillan Distribution to bring their titles to market.
