Weidenfeld & Nicolson has bought UK and Commonwealth rights in How to Build a Star, a book showcasing the remarkable stories of the scientists who have dedicated their lives to harnessing the power of nuclear fusion.
The book has been authored by Arthur Turrell, plasma physicist, visiting scientist at Imprerial College London and research economist at the Bank of England. According to W&N, he recounts "the torrid history of nuclear innovation, from splitting the atom to the rise of deadly weapons" and explores "exactly what it means to go nuclear", explaining the innovations in this area that would allow us to recreate the power of the stars on our own planet. At stake is a source of energy that could provide power for millions, or even billions, of years.
Paul Murphy, editorial director at Weidenfeld & Nicolson, did the deal with Martin Redfern at Northbank Talent Management, and will publish in hardback, e-book and audio in March 2021.
He commented: "The idea of scientists being able to recreate a star here on earth is such an exciting one, and Arthur is the perfect author to write the definitive account of our quest to harness the power of nuclear fusion in an accessible and entertaining way. He is passionate about his subject, and science communication more generally, and I am delighted that W&N will be publishing his first book."
Turrell added: "I am thrilled to be bringing the astonishing story of those who would build a star on Earth to a wider audience. The quest for fusion is fascinating – there’s mysterious types of matter, giant lasers, secretive start-ups in warehouses and the most powerful forces in the Universe. And, to top it all, this process which powers all of the stars in the sky may just save our planet too. I think that’s a story well worth telling."
