Virago has scooped The Real Bohemians, a new history of early twentieth century bohemian London, by art historian and novelist Alicia Foster.
Virago publisher Sarah Savitt acquired UK and Commonwealth rights in a three-way auction from Sophie Scard at United Agents, and the book is scheduled for publication in spring 2026.
"In The Real Bohemians, Alicia Foster will uncover the stories of twelve radical women, well-known while alive but increasingly lost to us," the synopsis says. "Through a series of meetings between them, against a backdrop of the haunts of bohemian London — bedsits and flats, Soho and the Café Royal on Piccadilly — these lives will be unveiled."
Savitt said: "I’m delighted to welcome Alicia Foster to the Virago list, which has a long and proud tradition of publishing untold stories of women’s lives. The Real Bohemians is a completely fresh take on bohemian London, which is so often only associated with the Bloomsbury set. Foster’s beautiful, generous writing brings these women to life and returns them to their proper place in history."
Foster added: "I’m thrilled to have a home for The Real Bohemians with Virago, who have done so much to shine a light on the stories of women."
