Simon & Schuster has acquired the rights to Maya’s Laws of Love by Alina Khawaja.
Mina Asaam, editorial assistant, fiction, acquired UK and Commonwealth rights in a two-way auction from Nora Rawn at Harlequin US. North American rights were acquired there by Leah Mol at Mira. Simon & Schuster UK will publish in spring 2024 as a paperback original with audio and e-book simultaneously.
The synopsis reads: “Maya’s Laws of Love follows a young woman on her way to her wedding in Pakistan. She doesn’t believe that love and romance are things that can happen for her – she is cursed and things always go wrong. So an arranged marriage with a college friend seems like a safe bet. Until the plane is forced to make an emergency landing in Switzerland, and she’s forced on an adventure with the grumpy but handsome stranger from the plane…”
Assam said: “I’m so excited to be working with Alina to bring her charming debut to a wider market. I was immediately drawn in by the familiar romance (who hasn’t felt cursed in dating before?), but Alina knows her genre well and knows exactly where to deliver fresh angles on it, as well as sharing her love for Pakistani culture. Also, as a Korean drama fan my heart was full reading these cross-cultural influences on the story. This is a great opportunity and S&S is so pleased to be Alina’s UK and Commonwealth publisher to ensure her novel reaches all its readers.”
Khawaja said: “I’m so excited for Maya to go abroad! As a book that features a lot of travelling, it’s so special to me that my book gets to actually travel as well. I’m so grateful to the S&S UK team for seeing the potential in my work and wanting to help share it with a wider audience across the pond. I can’t wait for you all to meet Maya!”
