Simon & Schuster Children’s Books has acquired two picture books from a new partnership between debut author Charissa Coulthard and bestselling illustrator Sam Usher, after a "competitive" five-way auction.
Helen Mackenzie Smith, picture books publisher, acquired world rights in a two-book deal from Sam Copeland at RCW for Coulthard’s text. Mackenzie Smith then acquired Usher’s illustrations from Penny Holroyde at Holroyde Cartey.
S&S will publish the first picture book, The Fun We Had, on 4th July 2024. It is described as “a deeply moving story about the loss of a grandparent told with reassurance and love". It has already sold in two languages, Danish and Greek, with more deals expected. Book two will follow in summer 2025
Mackenzie Smith said: ‘I’ll never forget the first time I read Charissa’s astonishing text; it was one of those moments as an editor when you just know you have to publish a piece of writing. And to be able to put Charissa’s beautiful words with Sam’s irresistible illustrations has been a dream come true.”
Coulthard added: “The Fun We Had was inspired by the bond shared between my young son and his Nana — my mum — who passed away last year. I wanted to write something about loss that would ultimately celebrate how powerful and precious our memories of loved ones are — especially when we no longer have them close.
“This story is very special to me and I’m so grateful to the wonderful team at S&S for believing in it. Sam Usher’s illustrations are stunning and timeless, and he has brought the words to life so perfectly. I really hope this book can help bring some comfort to readers — whatever their age.”
