Orion Spring has acquired a collection of “lyrical and political” poetry about modern womanhood, What Kind of Woman, from American writer and Instagram poet Kate Baer.
Publishing director Pippa Wright and senior editor Ru Merritt bought UK rights from Jenny Meyer at the Jenny Meyer Literary Agency, on behalf of Joanna MacKenzie at the Nelson Literary Agency.
The e-book and audiobook editions will be published on 6th May 2021 while the hardcover will be published on 26th June 2021, retailing at £16,99.
Orion said: “Kate Baer’s poetry is as unforgettably beautiful as it is accessible, and publication of her debut collection established her as an exemplary voice in modern poetry. Her words make women feel seen in their own bodies, in their own marriages, and in their own lives. Her poems have gone viral many times, as we strive to share their resonant words with our mothers, daughters, sisters and friends.”
What Kind of Woman became an instant bestseller on first publication in the US, becoming a Goop Bookclub pick with a personal endorsement from Gwyneth Paltrow. Baer was dubbed by Vogue as "The Instagram Poet for People Who Don’t Like Instagram Poets" in a profile piece last year with more than 124,000 following her on the social media platform.
Baer, based on the East Coast of the US, said the deal was a "dream come true". She added: “I am absolutely thrilled to be working with Orion to get my book into the hands of UK readers."
Wright said: “Like so many people, I first fell in love with Kate’s writing online, and couldn’t be happier to bring her stunning poetry to Orion Spring. Her extraordinary poems are both lyrical and political – they speak so eloquently and fiercely to the times we live in.”
