Indigo Press scoops Tansy E Hoskins' investigation into 'community, consumption and waste'
The Indigo Press has acquired Charity Shop World: An Investigation into Community, Consumption and Waste by investigative journalist Tansy E Hoskins.
Susie Nicklin, founder, publisher and commissioning editor at The Indigo Press, acquired world English-language rights from Andrew Gordon at David Higham Associates. The book will be published in B-format hardback on 3rd September 2026.
In the book, Hoskins “dig[s] deep into the world of charity shop volunteering”. The synopsis reads: “From used underwear to wolf pelts, Charity Shop World is a personal account of sorting through donations to reveal the entanglement of people and products. This book also investigates the export of clothes to overseas markets and landfill, revealing hidden shareholders behind a multi-million pound business.”
The book comes at a time when more than “80 billion pieces of clothing” are being produced each year, and human made items in the world now outweigh living biomass. Hoskins’ third book promises to “call for a new way of living to rise up from the debris of overproduction and consumption”.
Hoskins said: “It is wonderful to be part of the hugely supportive book trade in the UK and to get to keep writing about the global fashion industry. As an investigative journalist there is nothing better than being given the time and space to really explore and evaluate an issue like charity shop clothing waste and its link to austerity and the cost-of-living crisis.”
