Hutchinson has acquired a memoir by Nelson Mandela's grandson at auction for an undisclosed sum.
Going to the Mountain: Lessons from my Grandfather is Ndaba Mandela's story of the "unforgettable time" he spent living with, and learning from, "one of the greatest leaders and humanitarians the world has ever known": his grandather, Nelson Mandela.
Sarah Rigby, senior editor at Hutchinson, acquired UK and Commonwealth rights (excluding Canada) in the book (including print, e-book and audio) from Esmond Harmsworth at Aevitas Creative Management.
Hutchinon has promised the "inspiring" title will "paint a new portrait of the man to whom so many feel a unique connection", revealing the "transformative power" of the life lessons that Mandela shared with his grandson – of resilience, peace and hope.
Rigby commented: "Arresting, honest and inspiring, Going to the Mountain promises to be a moving and powerful book that will have a lasting resonance beyond this 100th birthday year. Nelson Mandela’s inspirational life lessons of compassion, hope and change are needed now more than ever, and there is nobody better placed to share them with the world than the grandson he raised."
The book's author, Ndaba Mandela, said: "To the world he was Mandela, one of the greatest change-makers in history, but to me he was the Old Man, Madiba, who raised me. My goal in writing Going to the Mountain is to breathe new spirit and understanding into Madiba’s words and to share my unique perspective on my extraordinary grandfather. I hope readers will find solace, direction, and inspiration in this untold story and Madiba’s timeless message of resilience, peace and hope. I could not be more delighted to be partnering with Hutchinson to share the life lessons he imparted to me."
Hutchinson will publish in hardback and e-book on 28 June 2018, with an export trade paperback on 26th June 2018, just ahead of the worldwide celebrations on 18th July 2018 to mark what would have been Nelson Mandela’s 100th birthday.
Ndaba Mandela is the co-founder and co-chairman of the Africa Rising Foundation, an organisation dedicated to promoting a positive image of Africa around the world and to increasing its potential for growth in the areas of education, employment and international corporate alliances. He also serves as an executive director for UN AIDS, which seeks to end discrimination around HIV/AIDS, and the founder of the Mandela Project.
