Ebury’s Virgin Books imprint has scooped journalist, podcaster and campaigner Anna Codrea-Rado’s practical guide to working for yourself.
Commissioning editor Lucy Oates acquired UK and Commonwealth rights in a multi-publisher auction from Lucy Morris at Curtis Brown. You’re the Business: How to Build a Successful Career When You Strike Out Alone will be published in March 2021.
The synopsis says: “You're the Business is a comprehensive companion for anybody who works for themselves – from florists to accountants – outlining a flexible approach to working life. Based on her own personal experiences going freelance, Anna Codrea-Rado will offer practical advice and support strategies to the growing numbers of freelances, side-hustlers and creative entrepreneurs in the UK. From finding clients and setting rates, to saving for taxes and dealing with insecurities, the book will empower readers with the skills, knowledge and confidence needed to thrive when they strike out alone.”
Codrea-Rado is a journalist who has appeared in publications including the New York Times, the Guardian and Wired. Her newsletter The Professional Freelancer is a weekly staple for thousands of readers. As a vocal proponent for freelance workers’ rights, she launched the #FairPayForFreelancers campaign in 2019, and alongside the writer Tiffany Philippou, Codrea-Rado co-hosts the hit weekly podcast "Is This Working".
She said: “I'm thrilled to be working with Virgin Books to publish my first book among so many authors I admire. When I went freelance, there was no handbook for how to make it work going it alone. I hope You're the Business will help other freelances and creative entrepreneurs not only be successful in their careers, but also happy in themselves.”
Oates added: “Freelances have long been overlooked when it comes to career development, but Anna is such a reassuring and authoritative voice in an unsettling time. I’m delighted to be working with her, and bringing her simple strategies to anybody who wants to take their working life to the next level, on their own terms.”
