Telegraph journalist Radhika Sanghani is to write two books for Harlequin UK’s Mills & Boon imprint, with her debut described as “an X-rated Bridget Jones for the younger end of Generation Y”.
Sanghani’s first book will be called Virgin, and is a “warm, funny, contemporary novel, which tackles the sex and relationship concerns that young women face with a refreshing relatable candour”.
It follows 21-year-old Ellie’s quest to rid herself of her virginity.
Editor Anna Baggaley acquired the rights to Virgin and another novel from Madeleine Milburn of the Madeleine Milburn Literary, TV and Film Agency.
Baggaley said of Virgin: “A novel bursting with wry confessional humour about sex and dating that so many women will connect with, this is the kind of book that you absolutely have to talk about and won’t be able to resist sharing with your friends.”
Milburn said Sanghani reminded her of a “young Caitlin Moran” and added: “Virgin is an X-rated Bridget Jones for the younger end of Generation Y. Funny and daring, the novel offers a powerful observation on the societal pressures that young women face concerning sex and status today.”
Sanghani works for the Telegraph’s women’s section, where she writes about politics, health and “trends that make her editors blush”.
Harlequin will publish Virgin as a paperback original on 1st August, with the second novel published in summer 2015.
Rights have also sold in America, Croatia, the Czech Republic, France, Hungary, Italy, Japan, Norway, Poland, Brazil and Serbia.
