Weltbild and Hugendubel launch new e-book reader

German booksellers Weltbild and Hugendubel have launched their own e-book reader, a week before the Kindle goes onsale in Germany.

Weltbild and Hugendubel are offering the device at €59.99, one of the most competitively priced in the German market. The device measures 13 x 18 x 1 centimetres, weighs only 282 grams and can carry up to 2000 books. Thirty excerpts from the latest bestsellers have been pre-installed. The two booksellers have aggressively extended their digital book range to more than 120,000 titles, many of them up to 20% cheaper than the printed books.

According to Weltbild’s managing director Dr. Klaus Driever, the e-book market in Germany has grown significantly since the early summer. “The demand has been growing quite significantly.” Speculation is ongoing that Weltbild is also planning to launch its own tablet computer before Christmas.
