Judy Blume's novel Tiger Eyes is the latest title to be adapted for screen by Tesco's Amber Entertainment film arm. The retailer confirmed that it was financing the deal and that filming has begun, although it could not confirm how the film would be distributed or when it would be made available.
The 1980s YA novel is the story of a young girl named Davey and her troubles coping with the death of her father and the subsequent relocation of her family.
Tesco's Rob Salter category director for entertainment said: "By financing the adaption of top selling novels to feature films, such as Tiger Eyes, Tesco brings a new and exciting way for our customers to see films that might not have been made in the conventional way. This means we can deliver more value for our customers. Judy Blume is already known to our customers so we felt she was a good match for Tesco and the 20 million or so people that shop in our stores every week."
Earlier this year The Bookseller reported on Tesco's move into straight-to-DVD film production. An adaptation of Jackie Collins' Paris Connections went on sale in spring, while Josephine Cox's Blood Brothers is also in production.
Philip Pullman, Dick and Felix Francis, Karin Slaughter, Jacqueline Wilson and Anne Perry were also reported to be in talks with Tesco.
