Sourcebooks has joined with Penguin Random House (PRH) North Asia office to create Callisto China, Publisher’s Marketplace reports, publishing a selection of Callisto’s titles in the local language.
Dominique Raccah, Sourcebooks c.e.o., said in the announcement: “Callisto has developed an extraordinary line of books which have never had exposure to an international audience. This new collaborative partnership with PRH North Asia brings Callisto to the Chinese market in a really comprehensive way.” PRH North Asia already distributes Sourcebooks and their English-language editions of Callisto titles.
Azia Cheng, c.e.o. of PRH North Asia, added: “As we forge our partnership, we tap into the vibrant pulse of China’s market, where the demand for children’s non-fiction and educational books is expanding rapidly. This collaboration is more than a business interaction; it is a dedication to the growth and enlightenment of young minds. Our entry into this market with a robust catalogue of children’s titles is a response to the increasing emphasis on holistic development—mental, physical, and emotional—in early education.”
She continued: “We are equally committed to the adult segment, recognising the growing interest in self-care and lifelong learning among Chinese adults.”
Last week The Bookseller reported it understood PRH had cut around 10 roles from its China local publishing team based in Beijing, representing the bulk of staff who have been handling its Chinese-language publishing.
PRH’s international export sales and rights teams for the region, based in Beijing and Shanghai, were not thought to have been affected. A spokesperson for PRH told The Bookseller: "We remain committed to continuously attracting the best talent to keep pace with the rapid evolution of China’s market landscape."
