ShelterBox Book Club, the UK’s first non-profit book subscription service, is celebrating its five-year anniversary having raised £1,250,000 for the charity ShelterBox.
Founded in 2018, the ShelterBox Book Club supports the Cornwall-based international disaster relief charity ShelterBox which provides emergency shelter and provisions to vulnerable people. The book box subscription is currently supporting displaced peoples in Morocco, Turkey, Syria, Libya, east Africa, Ukraine, Yemen and Burkina Faso.
Every six weeks subscribers receive a book, selected by subscribers from a shortlist of three, which explore the countries in which ShelterBox offers aid. The book also arrives with a letter about the family the subscriber has supported through their membership.
Catherine Thornhill, "head bookworm", commented: "Each month our members help to make a real difference around the world. The people our charity supports have often had to leave behind their homes, belongings, livelihoods, and sometimes even loved ones. Our book club is raising funds to help people who need it with different combinations of emergency shelter, and basic items like water filters, mosquito nets and blankets, to make the biggest difference for communities after disaster. The difference this book club and our members are making to people all over the world is incredible and sometimes I have to just stop and let that sink in – it’s remarkable.”
