Quercus has signed world rights to a YA novel it describes as "The Handmaid's Tale meets Heat magazine".
Only Ever Yours, by 28-year-old debut author Louise O'Neill, is set in a world where girls are no longer born naturally, but instead are bred for their beauty and raised to please men until they are old enough to become wives or concubines.
Editor Niamh Mulvey signed rights to Only Ever Yours from Rachel Conway at Capel and Land. She said: "While the novel is ostensibly dystopian, it is really about the contemporary obsession with the female body. And, at its heart, it is a heartbreaking story of friendship, love and loss."
O'Neill, from west Cork, is a graduate of Trinity College Dublin and has worked for Elle magazine in New York.
Only Ever Yours will be published in August 2014.
