OverDrive has acquired Australian e-book company Booki.sh for an undisclosed sum in a move which the US digital distributor said will allow a “fresh, direct and immersive” reading experience for libraries and schools.
Booki.sh is a cloud-based platform for distributing, selling and reading e-books which does not require the user to first install an app in order to read the book. OverDrive plans to expand its new acquisition’s distribution and digital bookstore platforms as well as integrate Booki.sh HTML5 and ePub reading technologies into OverDrive library and school services.
Steve Potash, OverDrive c.e.o. and president, said: “The Booki.sh team have created a fresh, direct and immersive reading experience that uniquely serves the mission of our libraries and schools. Its innovative technologies streamline the access and convenience of e-books, which will help shape how millions of readers and students enjoy e-books from OverDrive’s network of thousands of libraries, schools and booksellers in over 20 countries.”
Booki.sh co-founder and principal Virginia Murdoch said she was “excited” to help OverDrive establish a base in Australia “and to continue our work with local booksellers and publishers to promote the Australian book industry further afield".
