New Quercus imprint riverrun is to publish The Easy Way Out, a "brilliantly, witty and moving" novel by Steven Amsterdam.
Niamh Mulvey, senior commissioning editor at riverrun, acquired UK and Commonwealth rights to the novel from Nicola Barr at Greene and Heaton.
Amsterdam is a palliative care nurse and an award-winning author, whose first book, Things We Didn't See Coming (Vintage), was long-listed for the Guardian First Book Award in 2011.
Taking as its premise that assisted suicide has been legalised, the novel follows the story of 30-something nurse Evan, who works with terminally ill patients who have made the decision to end their own lives.
Mulvey said: "As more of us live longer, the question of who gets to decide how we die becomes more relevant and more complicated than ever. Steven’s brilliantly, witty and moving novel explores these issues in a book guaranteed to get people talking. I’ve been amazed at the stories people have told me when I mention this book to them. It’s obviously a subject we feel the need to explore and there could be no more intelligent and compassionate book to start the conversation."
riverrun will publish in hardback in November 2016.
