Lucy Hale, previously of Hachette UK, has been appointed to the newly-created role of publisher for Pan.
Hale will be tasked with leading and growing brand and genre fiction, and popular non-fiction in hardback through the Macmillan, Mantle and Tor imprints, and in paperback, through Pan. She will report to Jeremy Trevathan, publisher of the Macmillan adult division.
Hale's previous role as deputy c.e.o. for Hodder & Stoughton, Quercus, Headline and John Murray went as part of a shake-up at Hachette UK last year. While at the firm she played a key part in developing and implementing the group's publishing and acquisition strategy.
Before joining Hachette, she was UK sales director and international sales director at Pan Macmillan.
Trevathan explained: “Lucy’s appointment is the final piece in a restructure of Pan Macmillan’s adult publishing, that we started in 2018, into three key divisions: Pan, Picador and Bluebird, with the aim of focusing on our key segments, audiences and channels. I’m thrilled to welcome Lucy back because she brings a unique combination of fiction and non-fiction editorial sensibility combined with an unstoppable ambition for all the books and authors with whom she works.”
At Hachette, Hale played a major role in developing top fiction brands such as Stephen King, John Grisham and Jodi Picoult, establishing and growing bestsellers including David Nicholls, David Mitchell and Graham Norton. She also published major non-fiction bestsellers such as Alex Ferguson's autobiography, Stephen Hawking’s Brief Answers to the Big Questions (John Murray) and Lady Anne Glenconner's Lady in Waiting (Hodder).
Hale said: “I am so delighted to be coming home to Pan Macmillan and to be able to add my contribution to the amazing success which the company has achieved in recent years. I'm really looking forward to building on the extraordinary foundations of Pan and to leading the list in a new and exciting direction.”
C.e.o. Anthony Forbes Watson added: “I’m very pleased to welcome Lucy back to Pan Macmillan: she understands and helped to build the underlying values of the company and she knows from direct experience what goes into the making of a bestseller, which is the point of Pan. I’m looking forward very much to working with and supporting Lucy and Jeremy as they broaden and deepen Pan’s place in the market, and to the excitement this will generate.”
