Macmillan staff will have to wait until April to learn whether or not they will receive a pay rise in 2009. Chief executive Annette Thomas has told employees across all divisions that the decision will be delayed until a review in early April because of the current economic uncertainties.
Thomas said the three-month delay would "give us time to make a more considered evaluation of the recession on our business."
Last week Macmillan US announced it would be freezing salaries at 2008 levels for staff making more than $50,000 (£30,700). Pearson has announced a global pay freeze, meaning that Penguin staff in the UK earning over £30,000 have had their salaries frozen. However Random House UK has said it will not be freezing pay for its employees.
