Publishers Association president Stephen Lotinga has described the continued lack of political resolution on Brexit as "exasperating" and "just not good enough", as the latest parliamentary vote saw prime minister Theresa May last night again face defeat on her Brexit deal.
MPS will vote later today (Wednesday 13th March) on leaving the EU with a 'no deal'.
The latest developments see the country's future trading position as unclear as ever a fortnight before the UK's planned EU departure date, and just as all book industry eyes are on London during the London Book Fair.
Lotinga said: “The result of the latest vote on the deal further demonstrates the total political gridlock we are faced with. It is exasperating and, frankly, just not good enough that we find ourselves in this position weeks away from the day the UK is due to leave the EU.
“We hope that all sides will come together to take no deal off the table in tomorrow’s vote. However, even if that happens, we still face prolonged uncertainty and the industry’s patience is at its limits.
“Again, we restate the urgent need for political consensus and a way forward to be found.”
