Little, Brown has acquired a "strikingly original" debut, buying UK and Commonwealth rights in Breath on Glass by Jennifer Cryer.
Richard Beswick, managing director of Little, Brown/Abacus, bought the title through Caroline Dawnay at United Agents.
The book tells the story of two sisters and the love and rivalry between them as one desperately wants to have a child.
Beswick said: "Big themes - identity, genetic inheritance, fidelity - combine with a compelling story and a rich and sophisticated prose style."
Little, Brown will publish in spring 2012.
