Harvill Secker has acquired The Flamethrowers by Rachel Kushner, describing it as "an ambitious, sexy and brilliant novel".
Editorial director Michal Shavit bought UK and Commonwealth rights excluding Canada in the title from Caspian Dennis at Abner Stein on behalf of Susan Golomb in the US, at auction. Harvill Secker plans to publish in June 2013.
Shavit said: "The Flamethrowers is like no other novel in its evocation of the thrilling near-oblivion of youth, speed, art and love.
"Kushner depicts so vividly all of the giddiness, loneliness and uncertainty of a young woman hurling herself into an unknown life. This woman is taking on America in all its complexity and with all its contradictions: its landscape, its art and culture, its history and geography and its technology. It is an ambitious, sexy and brilliant novel that sets Rachel Kushner apart as an exceptionally exciting talent and this marks her remarkable debut in the UK."
