Gollancz has acquired a new epic fantasy trilogy from Stephen Donaldson, author of the Chronicles of Thomas Covenant series.
The Great God’s War is set in the midst of a magical war and follows a prince who embarks on a desperate quest to find a sorcerous library that might hold the knowledge required to save his kingdom. The tale is "filled with Donaldson’s trademark ingenious world-building, strong characterisation, and riveting storytelling".
Gollancz commissioning editor, Marcus Gipps, bought UK and Commonwealth rights, excluding Canada, to the three-book series from Caspian Dennis at the Abner Stein agency, acting on behalf of Howard Morhaim, of the Howard Morhaim Literary Agency. Berkley Books will publish simultaneously in North America.
The first book in the trilogy, Seventh Decimate, will be published in hardback, export trade paperback, audio download and e-book in October 2017.
Gipps said: “Gollancz is thrilled to welcome Stephen Donaldson back with a fantastic new trilogy. The Thomas Covenant books remain one of the most beloved and bestselling fantasy series ever written; the Gap sequence ranks with the best science fiction I’ve ever read; and Stephen’s various stand-alone novels, novellas and crime books have always been firm favourites. We’re very much looking forward to introducing the world to Stephen’s next great work”.
Donaldson is the author of 21 fantasy, science fiction, and mystery novels, as well as three collections of short fiction. He has received several awards for his work, including the John W. Campbell Award and the World Fantasy Award. He holds an honorary doctorate in literature from the University of St. Andrews in Scotland.
