Fourth Estate will publish the latest novel by The Joy Luck Club author Amy Tan after HarperCollins bought The Valley of Amazement.
Publication date for the novel is expected to be autumn 2012. Daniel Halpern, president and publisher of Ecco, bought US rights from Sandra Dijkstra. Canadian rights were bought by Iris Tupholme, vice-president and publisher of HarperCanada from John Pearce of Westwood Creative Artists. Fourth Estate editorial director Clare Reihill will publish the book in the UK.
Tan said: "The Valley of Amazement is a story about 1890-1940 San Francisco, Shanghai and the valley in-between. A painting called the 'Valley of Amazement' is passed along through three generations of women of the same family. Despite vast differences in their upbringing, culture and circumstances, each of the women is drawn to discover the meaning of the painting and the unknown histories of their mothers. I am delighted to be at Ecco and to be publishing my new novel with such an esteemed literary house."
Halpern said: "For so many years I've read Amy Tan with awe and admiration - and from the audience, listened to her as a rocker with The Rock Bottom Remainders. What a privilege it is for the Ecco team to be Amy's new publisher."
