Faber Alliance publisher Quercus has acquired UK and Commonwealth rights to a "spellbinding" debut by Christie Lefteri entitled A Watermelon, a Fish and a Bible.
Jon Riley. Quercus’ trade editor-in-chief, and assistant editor Charlotte Clerk struck the deal via literary agent Marianne Gunn O’Connor.
The novel is set in Cyprus during the Turkish invasion of 1975 and tells the story of three different characters whose lives are tied up in the past of a small village.
Riley said he was "delighted" that Lefteri had chosen Quercus as her British publisher, saying the novel would be " a fantastic addition to our spring 2010 list".
He added: "What is exceptional about A Watermelon, a Fish and a Bible is how she writes of the power of love across history, frontiers and war zones. It is deeply moving and rich in atmosphere. She is a very talented writer with a bright future and we are so pleased to be a part of it."
Gunn O’Connor added: "Christie is a fantastic writer, so I wanted the right publishing house and the right editor for her and I’ve found them."
