Green Party MP Caroline Lucas, BBC chief international correspondent Lyse Doucet and American neurosurgeon Rahul Jandial were among authors at Cornerstone’s showcase held at The Hoxton Hotel last night (Tuesday 6th February).
The showcase celebrated Cornerstone’s major smart non-fiction titles and new voices for 2024 from across its imprints Cornerstone Press, Hutchinson Heinemann and #Merky Books. An audience of booksellers, publishing professionals and journalists heard from five authors discussing their upcoming books.
Speakers included Lucas, former leader and co-leader of the Green Party, on reclaiming the national story, as highlighted in Another England, while leading neurosurgeon Jandial revealed his research on what our sleeping brains can tell us about waking life, as explored in This Is Why You Dream, both out in April.
Anthropologist and Oxford academic Harvey Whitehouse presented a new perspective on understanding human history with Inheritance: The Evolutionary Origins of the Modern World, based on 40 years of his international research, while Eminent internet entrepreneur Chris Dixon shared a vision for the future of the internet, as detailed in Read Write Own, which was published last week.
The event was rounded off with a speech from Doucet, presenter and chief international correspondent for the BBC, who shared a vivid account of life in modern Afghanistan from The Finest Hotel in Kabul. The book explores the history of the city through the hotel she has stayed at during her reporting since 1988.
Rowan Borchers, publishing director, and Anna Argenio, editorial director at Cornerstone, introduced the evening.
Borchers said: “From the history of England and Afghanistan to the cutting-edge science of religion and dreams to the future of the internet, we are proud to publish such a talented roster of writers and thinkers in 2024, each of whose books offer striking new perspectives on today’s world. It was a brilliant evening and exciting to see such a brilliant mix of ideas and concepts explored.”
Guests received a tote bag featuring exclusive proofs and samplers of the authors’ upcoming books, a "Read Write Own" bookmark with a key to unlock a unique generative art NFT and a preview of Cornerstone’s 2024 non-fiction publishing.
