Joanne Harris’ novel Chocolat (Doubleday) is to be York’s 'Big City Read for 2010' this summer.
Organised by City of York Council, the Big City Read will last from 14th July to the end of September. More than 7,000 copies of Harris' novel, which was made into a film starring Johnny Depp, will be given away during the period from explore centres and libraries across the city. It will also be available in large print, audio, and different languages.
There will be a series of events with reading groups and local history workshops exploring the significance of chocolate to York, tying into York Museums Trust and the York Festival of Food and Drink.
Harris will attend a signing event at York Explore on 14th July.
Last year's Big City Read was C J Sansom's Tudor-set novel Sovereign.
