Greetings card manufacturer Cardooo is looking to expand into the book trade with a range of “book in a card” products.
Nick Kenney, c.e.o. of parent company Best Publishing Ever and formerly head of export at Faber, said he had developed the range of cards to provide booksellers with a “non-book product” that would work in a bookshop.
The company launched in January with a range of activity birthday cards for children. Each card includes a mini activity book with game boards, stickers and colouring-in activities, and costs £2.99. The cards can be mailed with a standard first-class stamp.
A further card range, Journey Buddies, was launched this month with activities aimed at helping keep children busy during car journeys. Doodle cards are also planned and a range of traditional fairy story cards will be launched in October, as well as “get well” cards with colouring activities for children and puzzle books for adults. Advent calendar cards will be launched in time for Christmas.
The company is also talking to publishers about making short stories available for a “book in a card” range for adults, with poetry cards planned for Valentine’s Day next year.
Cardooo has licensed a series of “Dr Who” cards, which will include uniquely penned adventures by writers of the television show. The cards are launching in September.
While independent bookshops have “embraced” the idea of the non-book product, talks with bookseller chains and supermarkets are ongoing said Kenney, who is also getting interest in the card range internationally.
