Bodleian Library Publishing is releasing a new edition of a title by the author of How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, nearly fifty years since its initial publication.
How to Live Like a Lord Without Really Trying by Shepherd Mead will be published on 5th September 2012 as a £12.99 hardback, having first been published in 1962. Publisher Samuel Fanous negotiated world rights in the book through Mead's estate, having come across the book in the Bodleian's collection.
US ad man Mead moved to Britain with his family in 1958, and the book is a spoof handbook for fellow Americans to guide them through the nuanced ins-and-outs of British culture. It features the fictional experience of American couple Peggy and Buckley Brash and their two children, and covers topics including "How to Dress in England", "The Dream House and How to Rebuild It", and "How to Live with the Upper Classes Without Having Any Money". The volume will also feature 36 black and white cartoons.
Fanous said: "It is a wonderfully poignant and apposite look at the cultural differences and similarities between the two countries. It is . . . witty, satirical and deadly accurate."
