More than 300,000 iPads were sold on its first day, with more than 250,000 e-books downloaded at the same time, Apple has said.
The device went on sale in the US this Saturday (3rd April), with prices starting at $499 (£327). The sales figures include pre-orders, in-store sales, and "deliveries to channel partners", the company said.
As pointed out on the Guardian's technology blog, thishttp://www.guardian.co.uk/technology/blog/2010/apr/06/ipad-apple-tablet-... target="_blank"> "means that there aren't actually 300,000 iPads in peoples' hands just yet". However, the blog describes the iPad as "a success", with many features that will keep it selling.
Steve Jobs, Apple chief executive, said: "It feels great to have the iPad launched into the world - it's going to be a game changer. iPad users, on average, downloaded more than three apps and close to one book within hours of unpacking their new iPad."
There is no fixed date for the UK launch, with the http://www.apple.com/uk/ipad/" target="_blank">Apple website saying only that it is "coming late April".
