Amazon releases 'Reader's Edition' tablet

Amazon US has launched a new tablet "for readers" in time for Christmas called the Fire HD 8 Reader’s Edition.

The device, out in the US today (7th December), combines the Fire HD 8 with a year of Kindle Unlimited and access to over 1m books, along with a limited edition leather cover for $250 (£165.86).

The Reader’s Edition also includes Blue Shade, a new feature that adjusts and optimises the display on the Fire HD 8 tablet to reduce blue light exposure before bedtime.

Charlie Tritschler, vice president of Amazon Devices, said: “Fire HD 8 Reader’s Edition simply delivers the best reading experience on any tablet. With an incredibly thin and light design and 8” HD colour display, this is the perfect tablet for reading – a year of Kindle Unlimited with access to over a million books, plus innovative new features like Blue Shade – now even more readers can curl up in bed with their favourite stories.”

Kindle Unlimited subscription service allows unlimited reading of over 1m books and unlimited listening of thousands of audiobooks for $9.99 a month in the US, but is included for one year with Reader’s Edition. In the UK, Kindle Unlimited costs £7.99 a month.

The device also features ‘Bookerly Font’, a font designed for reading on digital screens; ‘Word Runner’, a speed-reading feature; adjustable fonts; Kindle sharing with instate previews and Immersion Reading, which allows Fire tablets to synchronise Kindle text with companion Audible audiobooks.

The tablet is 7.7mm with an 8” screen.
