HarperCollins has snapped up a book on the "global economic war" against Russia by Bloomberg News journalist Stephanie Baker.
Mudlark publishing director Joel Simons acquired UK and commonwealth rights excluding Canada for Punishing Putin from Toby Mundy, who was representing the book on behalf of Todd Shuster, at Aevitas. The book will be published on 12th September in hardback, e-book and audio.
Baker is a journalist who began her reporting career in Moscow and has chronicled the rise and fall of Russian billionaires, as well as the sanctions placed on Russia and the fallout from the full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
"Punishing Putin is the first account of the untold story of the global economic turmoil triggered by Putin’s invasion of Ukraine," the synopsis says. "Baker explains in fascinating detail how this furious shadow-war unfolded: its causes, how it is being executed, and its ability to affect Russia and the course of history."
The synopsis adds: "She brings her expertise and unparalleled access to Western and Russian sources to provide an in-depth, authoritative and timely look at the unprecedented economic war against Russia after Putin’s invasion of Ukraine. It includes exclusive and never-before-seen insight into the global economic response – from the White House to 10 Downing Street, and the European Commission."
Baker said: "I’m thrilled that HarperCollins will be publishing Punishing Putin, which takes readers into the high-stakes race to freeze Russia out of the Western financial system and tells the wild stories of targeting Russian billionaires. It’s a product of a lifetime of work."
Simons added: "Punishing Putin is an incredible work of investigative non-fiction by a journalist at the very top of her game."
