Faber has nabbed The Rising Down by Alexandra Harris, a "luminous feat of time travel" by the author of Romantic Moderns and Weatherland (both Thames & Hudson).
Associate publisher Laura Hassan acquired UK and Commonwealth rights (excluding Canada) from Caroline Dawnay at United Agents, and Faber will publish in March 2024.
"When the celebrated critic and cultural historian Alexandra Harris returned to her childhood home of West Sussex, she realised that she barely knew the place at all," the synopsis says. "As she probed beneath the surface, excavating layers of archival records and everyday objects – bringing a lifetime’s reading to bear on the place where she started – hundreds of unexpected stories and hypnotic voices emerged from the area’s past […] By focusing on one small patch of England, Harris finds ‘a world in a grain of sand’ and opens vast new horizons."
Hassan said: "In The Rising Down Harris thinks her way into lives distant from her own yet, so close that they shared the same ground. Harris excavates stories that have been undervalued because they were regional or rural and the result is an utterly beguiling and genre-expanding work of history."
