Virago has acquired the next two novels by Man Booker-shortlisted author Rachel Seiffert, with plans to publish the first in spring 2014.
Publisher Lennie Goodings bought UK and Commonwealth rights, excluding Canada, in the titles from Toby Eady at Toby Eady Associates. Seiffert was previously published by Vintage in the UK.
Hands Across the Water, the first novel, is described as being set in contemporary Glasgow and explores the ties that bind Scotland and Northern Ireland, through the story of a young displaced boy, saved from the damage done many generations back by the very family who nearly destroyed him.
Goodings said: "Rachel Seiffert is an extraordinarily honest and powerful writer and, with this new novel, in what appears to be a small family story, she embraces the big themes: fractured love between parents and children; the madness and loyalties that can split a family; the yearning to belong; the hope that sustains life. I have been an ardent admirer of her bold, searing writing for 12 years and I am thrilled to have the chance to publish her."
Seiffert was shortlisted for the Man Booker in 2002 for The Dark Room, which inspired a film called "Lore" which has just been released in the UK.
