Quercus imprint riverrun has acquired three new titles for its autumn list, including a collection of interlinked satirical short stories reacting to Donald Trump's presidency and life in a post-Trump, post-truth America from The Imperfectionists author Tom Rachman.
Rachman's "timely take on the craziness of today", entitled Basket of Deplorables, will publish on 24th August as a paperback original at £8.99, after UK and Commonwealth rights (excluding Canada) were acquired from Natasha Fairweather at RCW. The book, pitched as "an incisive and satirical look at America in the age of Trump – data breaches, liberal self-righteousness, red hat rancor, Starbuck macchiatos, Ultimate Fighting factories, Internet sinkholes and all", was originally commissioned by Audible and will be audio-first, available to buy from 23rd May 2017.
Basket of Deplorables will be joined on the riverrun list by a memoir from New Yorker writer Adam Gopnik and a novel set in a hospital by oncology specialist Sam Guglani. Jon Riley, publisher at riverrun, described the books as "a testament to the quality of writers and writing riverrun aspires to publish".
Gopnik's memoir, At the Strangers' Gate, is centred on the romance of New York City in the 1980s where he and his wife Martha began their married lives as two Canadian teens. It publishes on 19th October in hardback, priced £20. UK and Commonwealth rights, excluding Canada, were acquired from Tracy Bohan at The Wylie Agency.
Guglani, also the founder of not-for-profit organisation Medicine Unboxed, its aim "understanding medicine through the arts and humanities", meanwhile has written a "revealing and intimate" novel called Histories set in a hospital. It publishes on 2nd November in hardback, at £12.99. UK and Commonwealth rights, excluding Canada, were acquired from Claire Conrad at Janklow and Nesbit.
