Former HarperCollins publisher and novelist Hannah MacDonald has set up a new publishing venture, September Publishing.
The small non-fiction list, which will launch e-books and print titles in March 2015, is designed to offer a “fair share of success for authors”, with e-book royalties rising to 50%, and contracts that guarantee authors a regular meeting to discuss all aspects of publication.
MacDonald, who was made redundant as publisher at Collins in August 2013 after 20 years in non-fiction publishing, said September places “author focus, collaborative openness and long-term support at the heart of the business . . . we have a role to play beyond profit because we—unlike Google or Twitter—take responsibility for the words we publish.”
MacDonald hopes to create other individual, publisher-owned lists under the umbrella of the September banner.
