Kobo is to join the ranks of physical and online booksellers licensed by Pottermore to sell Harry Potter e-books.
The Canadian-based global retailer of e-books and e-readers announced this morning (17th May) that all seven of J K Rowling’s Harry Potter books are now on sale to Kobo customers through the Pottermore store, which can be accessed at http://www.kobobooks.com/harrypotter.
Charlie Redmayne, Pottermore c.e.o. said: “Kobo is an increasingly powerful player in the e-reading market and we are delighted to have them on board.”
Michael Tamblyn, Kobo executive vice-president Content, Sales & Merchandising, said: “We’re excited to bring together the extremely successful Harry Potter phenomenon and the always-enthusiastic Kobo e-reading community. Fans have been waiting for years to see the Harry Potter series in digital and now that wait is over."
Harry Potter e-books went on sale through Pottermore at the end of March, with the e-books featuring on retailer websites such as Amazon and Barnes & Noble, but can only be bought from Pottermore. Readers will then be able to securely "push" the digital books to up to eight devices concurrently, including the Sony Reader, Amazon's Kindle, Barnes & Noble's Nook, or receive an ePub version.
But the titles will not be available through Apple's iBookstore after Pottermore and Apple failed to reach agreement ahead of the launch.
A spokesperson for Kobo added: “Unique to Kobo, readers will also be able to track their progress in books with awards from Kobo Reading Life, and share their thoughts on exciting passages with Kobo Pulse. In addition, Kobo is the official e-reading partner of Facebook, letting readers easily update and chat with friends about Harry and his friends on Facebook.”
