London's largest children's bookshop, The Golden Treasury, is looking for a buyer, as current owner Sue Foster looks to retirement.
Foster started the shop based in Southfields, south west London, in 1995 from a small rental unit. She expanded the business four years later, and purchased the freehold of an adjacent property. Since then, the shop has been expanded several times, with a coffee shop also part of the 1,000 sq foot site.
Foster said the decision to retire had followed nine months of running the shop long distance from Nigeria where her husband has been working. She said: "This space from the business has enabled me to realise that now is a good time to retire and hand over the reins of The Golden Treasury to a new owner.
"I hope that a buyer will emerge for the business and continue the independent bookselling tradition in Southfields."
She added: "I am not sure that I am entirely ready to hang up my bookselling spurs completely. Since being in Africa, I have discovered that there is great bookselling potential here—in Nigeria good bookshops are virtually non-existent and there is a huge demand within the large ex-pat community. So possibly from Southfields to Nigeria to continue flying the independent bookselling flag, we shall see."
The agent handling the sale is Richard Cleminson at Kinleigh Commercial, on rcleminson@kfh.co.uk or 020 8739 2091.
