Faber's latest app, The Sonnets by William Shakespeare, has been released worldwide today via the iTunes App Store.
Priced £9.99 ($13.99), the app was developed by Faber and Touch Press, in partnership with Illuminations and The Arden Shakespeare.
First announced at London Book Fair, the iPad app features the 154 poems alongside elements such as specially filmed performances of the sonnets by a cast including Sir Patrick Stewart, Kim Cattrall, David Tennant, Sir Andrew Motion, Simon Russell Beale and Fiona Shaw.
Also included are features such as the complete Arden notes on the poems, with annotations and critical apparatus automatically synchronised with the readings line by line, as well as interviews with scholars such as James Shapiro and Professor Katherine Duncan-Jones.
Readers are also able to share their notes via Twitter, Facebook and email, with poet Don Paterson's thoughts on the sonnets, "Reading Shakespeare's Sonnets: A New Commentary", and a facsimile of the 1609 quarto showing Shakespeare's Sonnets as first published, also part of the app. It is also possible to stream the performances to watch in full-screen on AppleTV, with the 154 performances available to buy on DVD from http://thesonnets.tv.
Faber head of digital Henry Volans said: "We are proud of our continuing work with Touch Press and partners at the meeting point of literature and technology. The Sonnets lays down a new marker for reading—in the widest sense—in the digital world."
