Bloomsbury editor in chief Alexandra Pringle has made two acquisitions, one from a McSweeney's contributor and the other a memoir by a former CWA Gold Dagger winner.
She bought two books at pre-empt for an undisclosed sum from Arabella Stein from Abner Stein on behalf of Nicole Aragi. Pringle bought British Commonwealth rights to a collection of stories and a novel by Rajesh Parameswaran.
His short stories have appeared in McSweeney's and Zoetrope, among other publications.
Pringle said: "The stories, entitled I am an Executioner: Love Stories, are simply exceptional. He has a bold, dark, funny new voice. His stories are narrated by such diverse voices as a middle-aged Indian woman in the US, a tiger, an executioner in a prison, an elephant and an Indian man pretending to be a doctor. They are disturbing, clever and utterly original." It will be published in spring 2012.
The second is a new book from Lilian Pizzichini, who won a Gold Dagger for her debut, Dead Men's Wages. Pringle bought British Commonwealth rights from Annette Green for an undisclosed sum. Game of Chance looks at Pizzichini's drug addiction and how she came to feel at home among burglars, prostitutes, illegal immigrants and addicts in Southall, west London.
It will be published in spring 2012.
Pringle said: "It will take its place amongst the very best of memoirs."
