Bill Massey, deputy publishing director for fiction, is leaving Orion Books to become a freelance editorial consultant from 1st November 2016.
Massey will be continue to edit Orion authors Michael Connelly and Linwood Barclay in his new role, both of whom he is credited in publishing "with huge success over the years" by Orion.
His career has included spells at Hodder & Stoughton and Headline, and five years at Bantam Dell in New York. He joined the company in 2006 as editorial director of its trade division from Bantam Dell.
Massey has edited numerous global bestsellers and has acquired a string of bestselling authors including Conn Iggulden, Tess Gerritsen, Linwood Barclay and Justin Cronin.
He said: "I wanted to find a way of spending more time doing the thing I love, working with authors on their books, and hopefully this new role will allow me to do that."
