Quercus has bought high-concept novel The Architecture of Heaven by British freelance science writer Holly Cave.
Quercus fiction publisher Cassie Browne acquired UK and Commonwealth rights to the book, in what is her first acquisition for Quercus, in a two-book deal struck by Susan Armstrong at Conville & Walsh.
Global independent studio Entertainment One (eOne) optioned the television rights for the book with the deal brokered by Luke Speed of Curtis Brown Group on behalf of Susan Armstrong with eOne's Carolyn Newman.
The Architecture of Heaven, to be published in February 2018, is set in a near-future world where humans can create artificial heavens before they die, formed from the best memories of their lives. Heaven architect Isobel Argent has the perfect life, until she begins an affair with her married and terminally ill client, Jarek. When Jarek dies and soon after becomes a suspect in a murder which took place before his death, Isobel must fight to clear his name.
Browne said: "The Architecture of Heaven grabbed me instantly with its utterly original idea, its compelling story, and with the moral questions it asks about life after death. Holly matches her unique premise with superb storytelling in this dark and gripping read. I am thrilled and excited to be publishing this novel and to be working with Holly on this and her next book."
Armstrong said: "When Holly sent me The Architecture of Heaven I was blown away by her ability to spin a tale that is as imaginative as it is relatable, as compelling as it is thought-provoking, and where the characters are as gripping as the concept. Holly’s a joy to work with and I’m delighted she’s found her home with Cassie and the wonderful team at Quercus
Cave said: "I'm very lucky to have the invaluable raft of enthusiasm and support from Sue, Cassie, and the rest of the team at Quercus. I can't wait to see Isobel's world come to life on the printed page."
