William Collins, an imprint of HarperCollins Publishers UK, has acquired sleep scientist Matthew Walker’s "definitive guide to improving our sleep".
Editorial director Eva Hodgkin bought UK and Commonwealth rights to How Sleep Works from Matilda Forbes Watson at WME. Lydia Yadi at Crown acquired North American rights, with simultaneous publication scheduled for autumn 2027.
The book’s blurb reads: “Sleep is the foundation on which almost all human health rests. This mysterious state, in which we spend one third of our lives, has extraordinary physical, cognitive and emotional benefits – if we can learn how to sleep better.
“From the world-famous expert whose Why We Sleep first introduced sleep science to the world, How Sleep Works is the definitive guide to improving our sleep. It illuminates the miraculous inner workings of our ‘system of sleep’ and explores the tools, habits, biological mechanisms and cutting-edge science that can empower readers to find true rest."
Eva Hodgkin said: “We’re thrilled to welcome Matt Walker to William Collins. No one could be better placed to offer this life-changing guide to sleeping better and living better. Sleep is a state which connects us all, and whatever life stage or sleeping pattern we’re in, the book has wisdom, insight and advice to offer. This will be a landmark publication for the list, and we’re hugely proud to publish it.”
Matthew Walker is a professor of neuroscience and psychology, and founder of Berkeley’s Centre for Human Sleep Science, which he runs.
He said: “Sleep is the single most effective thing you can do for your health — but most advice about it is either vague, unrealistic or simply wrong. How Sleep Works is a definitive how-to guide: it separates myth from evidence, explains what actually drives good sleep, and gives readers clear, usable actions they can apply immediately – plus several ways to troubleshoot what’s getting in the way of a good night of sleep.”
