Simon & Schuster (S&S) UK has acquired The Science of Happiness by developmental psychologist Bruce Hood. Editorial director, non-fiction, Assallah Tahir, acquired world rights from Jaime Marshall of J P Marshall Literary Agency. It will publish 14th March 2024.
The synopsis reads: “We are all born egocentric, and as babies we simply don’t yet understand that other people have their own points of view, their own selfhood. As we grow, we learn that other people exist like we do, so we become more allocentric: more aware of the views, wants and needs of other people. In this smart thinking book, Hood shows that achieving and maintaining a healthy balance of egocentrism and allocentrism is the key to our wellbeing as adults.
“Hood is among the most prominent psychologists of our time. The book draws on his expertise in child development, neuroscience and positive psychology to tell this radical new story about the roots of well-being and the obstacles that lie in our path.”
Hood commented: “This book truly has something new to say. Building on the wisdom of the ancients, but applying the lens of modern developmental neuroscience, I will reveal that there are simple ways to re-calibrate our lives and achieve tangible and sustainable results.”
Tahir added: “Bruce’s insight into what biologically gets in the way of our happiness, and the practical things we can do to overcome those barriers and become happier, is eye-opening.”
Hood is professor of Developmental Psychology at Bristol University and the author of books including The Self Illusion (little, Brown) and The Domesticated Brain (Penguin).
