The Borough Press has snapped up The Nest author Cynthia D’Aprix Sweeney’s new novel Lake Effect. Suzie Dooré, editor at large for The Borough Press, acquired UK and Commonwealth rights. The original World English rights deal was brokered by Helen Atsma with Henry Dunow of Dunow, Carlson and Lerner, and Borough will publish alongside Harper US imprint Ecco in March 2026.
The book opens in 1977, when Nina Larkin has just been given a copy of The Joy of Sex by a more sexually enlightened neighbour. The book forces her to confront the lack of intimacy in her marriage, and leads her to a decision that will have far-reaching consequences for her whole family.
Dooré said: "When I first arrived at The Borough Press 10 years ago, I was greeted with the happy news that we’d acquired The Nest. Now I am delighted to continue publishing Cynthia with her brilliant new novel, which I simply devoured. It’s a book of such warmth and depth, with profound and beautiful things to say about what truly constitutes a family – I was reminded of both Ann Patchett and Anne Tyler, but Cynthia also brings her own unique flavour. I know UK readers are going to love Lake Effect."
Sweeney said: "Lake Effect is very close to my heart as it takes place in my home town and grapples with a question that has fascinated me for a very long time: what happens when an individual chooses personal happiness over family happiness? I’m thrilled to be partnering with all the talented folks at The Borough Press to bring this book to readers in the UK."
