Canongate has acquired Our Brains, Our Selves – neurologist Masud Husain’s debut book on brain disorders and identity.
Editorial director Simon Thorogood acquired UK and Commonwealth rights – excluding Canada – from Jessica Woollard at David Higham Associates. Canongate will publish the book in hardback, e-book and audiobook in February 2025, with a paperback to follow.
"Our Brains, Our Selves will explore how neurological conditions can make people become very different," the synopsis says. "Masud Husain presents seven people who have been affected by a neurological disorder. He shows us how they have changed and what they can reveal about how different brain functions construct our identities: identities that make us who we are and, ultimately, allow us to function in society."
Husain is professor of Neurology and Cognitive Neuroscience at the University of Oxford and a professorial fellow at New College, Oxford. He is also editor-in-chief of a leading international journal of neurology, Brain.
"Brain disorders can be very perplexing," Husain said. "I wanted to explain the neuroscience behind them, as well as tell the human stories of people with these conditions. This is a book about what patients tell us about how human brains create our personal and social identities – our selves."
Thorogood added: "Masud Husain is not only a brilliant clinician, but as this fascinating book shows he is also a born storyteller."
Woollard said: "A beautifully crafted and elegant book that sheds new light on the organ we still know so little about. I’m excited by Canongate’s plans for publication next year."
