Aster, an imprint of Octopus Books, has scooped Cooking and the Crown: Royal Recipes from Queen Victoria to King Charles III by food writer and restaurant critic Tom Parker Bowles. The author is the son of Queen Camilla, and he is the godson of King Charles III.
Publisher Stephanie Jackson acquired world all-language rights, excluding North America, from Felicity Blunt at Curtis Brown. The book, priced at £30, will be published in hardback on 26th September 2024.
Cooking and the Crown will feature more than 100 recipes, including everything from breakfasts, picnic lunches and dinners, to recipes for coronations and state banquets. It will also include stories about the chefs, customs and predilections of royal kitchens.
Bowles has been a food writer for over 20 years and is the author of eight books on food, including the Fortnum & Mason cookbooks (Fourth Estate). He is the restaurant critic for the Mail on Sunday and a contributing editor for Esquire, Country Life and Condé Nast Traveller, plus a regular judge on the BBC’s "Masterchef".
He said: "As a food history geek, I cannot tell you how exciting it has been to write this book. To read original recipes in the royal archive in Windsor, and disappear into the lives and reigns (and eating habits) of sovereigns from Queen Victoria onwards. But this is not about roast cygnet, ortolans and snipe stuffed with foie gras – rather a proper cookbook, filled with recipes that I’ve loved cooking. And hope that you will too."
Jackson added: "Tom Parker Bowles has blended history, monarchy and gastronomy to provide a fascinating window into the world of royal tastes and traditions as far back as Victorian times. Cooking and the Crown includes dishes of surprising simplicity, for everyday occasions, as well as sophisticated creations befitting celebrations of all kinds.
"It weaves together material from deep within the archives with contemporary accounts, personal insights and modern tastes – and an abundance of dishes everyone will enjoy. We are enormously proud to be publishing this glorious collection of inviting recipes – and so much more."
